I went camping this weekend. Nine of us went up north to a little provincial park called Mikisew, a few hours north of Orillia. The campsite was in a large campground in an open pine forest, so it wasn't very private. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't a little more rustic, as there was a toilet/shower/laundry facility in the center of it, but it was still fun, none the less.
Most of the weekend was spent sitting around the campfire, poking it, and keeping it going. I still smell slightly of wood smoke, despite three showers. There were a couple of scenic trails that we walked along, forests mostly, with a couple of neat rock faces that would have been fun to climb around on, if I had time. I really like hiking, and experiencing nature and wild life.
Saturday night, me and a couple of other guys stayed up late, and went star gazing. Despite the half moon, I was still able to see the faint northern part of the milky way, and all sorts of fainter stars that I can't see from home.
The park is on Eagle lake, a not small lake that has a number of islands in the middle of it. We had hoped to rent some canoes, and go out to one of them for lunch Sunday, but they were all out when we went. So the afternoon was spent swimming and lying out on the rocks in the sun. My calves cramped up while swimming, and even now are still tight and sore.
The trip home on Monday was nice, we jumped off the highway, and took mostly back roads from Orillia down to Waterloo, as the highways, and even the secondary roads, were stop and go from all the people heading back to Toronto from the long weekend camping trips. And aside from a little heat exhaustion monday night, and my calves, it was a really great trip.
It was fun, and reminded me how much I missed camping, but it was not the same as a good canoe trip through Algonquin. I really want to do more camping, especially longer canoe or hiking trips, into the more wild areas of nature.
